| Input | x = | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | Horizontal Axis |
| Output = -2 × Input | y = | 0 | -2 | -4 | -6 | Vertical Axis |
Slider - see what happens to y when you change x
Input box - see the y that you get when you put in a value for x
y = gradient × x
y = mx
y = ax
y = x + intercept
y = x + c
y = x + b
y = gradient × x + intercept
y = mx + c
y = mx + b
y = ax + b
QUESTION
What is the meaning of y =
ANSWER
Think of y as being the end result [the output] of something being done to a number [the input]
So y = ....
means that y [the output]
on the left hand side
is generated by doing something
to a number [the input]
on the right hand side
QUESTION
What is an intercept?
ANSWER
An intercept is where the line of the graph cuts through either the x or the y axis
QUESTION
What is the is the
y-intercept and x-intercept ?
ANSWER
The y intercept is where
the line of the graph
cuts through the y axis
[the vertical axis]
The x intercept is where
the line of the graph
cuts through the x axis
[the horizontal axis]
QUESTION
What is the graph of x = 0 ?
ANSWER
Consider the equation x = 0
it means that x always equals 0
y is not involved in the equation
so it does not matter what y is.
The graph of x = 0
will be the same as
the vertical axis [the y axis]
because on this line
x is always equal to 0
but y can take any value.
