Numbers - Factor Pairs

What is a factor pair?
A factor pair of a number is a pair of factors that multiply together to give the number

Can you give me an example of a factor pair?
Yes, 2 and 5 are a factor pair of 10 because 2 × 5 = 10

Are 1 and 10 also a factor pair of 10?
Yes, 1 and 10 are a factor pair of 10 because 1 × 10 = 10

So 10 has two factor pairs?
Yes
1 × 10 = 10 so 1 and 10 are a factor pair
2 × 5 = 10 so 2 and 5 are a factor pair
The number 10 has two factor pairs

Do all numbers have two factor pairs?
No
Some numbers only have one factor pair
an example is the number 7
1 × 7 = 7 so 1 and 7 are a factor pair
but no other numbers multiply together to give 7
So, the number 7 has only one factor pair

Can a number have more than two factor pairs?
Yes
an example is the number 12
1 × 12 = 12 so 1 and 12 are a factor pair
2 × 6 = 12 so 1 and 8 are a factor pair
3 × 4 = 12 so 1 and 8 are a factor pair
So, the number 12 has three factor pairs
